MANHATTAN, Kan. – Kansas State freshman forward Michael Beasley has announced he will forego his remaining three years of college eligibility and begin preparations for the June NBA Draft.

Beasley announced his intentions at a press conference on Monday, where he was joined by head coach Frank Martin and associate head coach Dalonte Hill as well as agent, Joel Bell of Bell Sports, Inc., of Gaithersburg, Md. Also in attendance were university president Dr. Jon Wefald, vice president of institutional advancement and athletics Bob Krause and deputy athletics director Jim Epps.

“I would like to announce that I am entering my name into the 2008 NBA Draft,” said Beasley in a prepared statement. “After consulting with my family and advisors, I have determined that this is the best course of action for me at this time. Kansas State will always be special for me, and I cannot think of a better place to be a student-athlete. The people in and around Manhattan have made this the best year of my life, and I definitely will come back and visit and support the school as much as I can. I want to thank my coaches for their help and guidance, as well as my mother for moving here this year to help support me. I thank everyone in the Kansas State community and I will certainly always be a Wildcat!”

“We are extremely thankful to Mike for helping us move our program into national spotlight once again,” said Martin. “He has been unbelievable in how he has represented, and will continue to represent Kansas State University. We are also very excited for the tremendous opportunity in which he is about to embark upon. Mike is a very talented player and we all know he will be very successful at the next level.”

Most national observers predict Beasley to one of the first selections in the 2008 NBA Draft, as he is projected as the No. 1 pick to the Miami Heat by www.draftexpress.com and the No. 2 pick to the Seattle Supersonics by www.nbadraft.net. He would be the first player to be drafted at Kansas State since Steve Henson went to the Milwaukee Bucks in the second round of the 1990 draft, while he would be just the sixth player in school history to be selected in the first round. Bob Boozer is the first and only Kansas State player to go No. 1 in the NBA Draft when he was the Cincinnati Royals’ top pick in 1959, while Mitch Richmond (No. 5 to the Golden State Warriors in 1988) is the school’s only lottery pick (first 14 selections) since the system was implemented in 1985.

Beasley compiled one of the greatest seasons ever by a college freshman in NCAA history, as he averaged 26.2 points on 53.2 percent shooting (307-of-577), including 37.9 percent from 3-point range, with 12.4 rebounds, 1.6 blocks, 1.3 steals and 1.2 assists in 31.5 minutes per game this season. He posted the second-most rebounds (408) by a freshman in NCAA history, trailing just the record of 462 set by Nevada’s Pete Padgett in 1972-73, while he collected the third-most points (866) by a freshman behind LSU’s Chris Jackson (965; 1988-89) and Texas’ Kevin Durant (903; 2006-07).

Beasley led the nation in six categories, including rebounding, double-doubles (28), 40-point games (three), 30-point games (13), 20-point, 10-rebound games (23) and 30-point, 10-rebound games (13), while he ranked third in scoring. He is just the third freshman in NCAA history to lead the nation in rebounding, joining Loyola’s Kenny Miller (1987-88) and Louisiana Tech’s Paul Millsap (2003-04). He also became just the 11th player in NCAA Division I history to post 28 or more double-doubles in a season and the first since Wake Forest’s Tim Duncan collected 29 during the 1996-97 season.

Beasley earned numerous accolades after the season, including National Player of the Year honors from both CBS Sports.com and Rivals.com and National Freshman of the Year honors from CBS Sports.com, Rivals.com, CollegeHoops.net, The Sporting News and U.S. Basketball Writers Association (USBWA). He also was selected a first team All-American by numerous outlets, including The Associated Press, State Farm/National Association of Basketball Coaches, John R. Wooden Award, CBS Sports.com, Dick Vitale, ESPN.com, Rivals.com, Sports Illustrated, The Sporting News and U.S. Basketball Writers Association. He was also chosen as a first team Freshman All-American by CBS Sports.com and Rivals.com. In addition, he was named both the Big 12 Player and Freshman of the Year by the league coaches, The Associated Press, Kansas City Star and Rivals.com as well as a unanimous all-conference first team selection by nearly every media outlet.

Beasley already holds 30 Kansas State career, single-season and freshman records as well as 17 Big 12 single-game and single-season marks. He is both the school’s and conference’s all-time single-season leader in scoring average (26.2 ppg.) and double-doubles (28), while he owns school single-season marks for points (866), rebounds (408), most 30-point games (13), most 20-point games (26), field goals made (307), free throws made (216) and free throws attempted (279).

Beasley and company helped Kansas State post a 21-12 overall record in 2007-08, including a third-place finish in the Big 12 with a 10-6 mark. The Wildcats advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the first time in nearly 12 years and captured its first NCAA Tournament win since 1988 with their 80-67 victory over USC in the first round of the Midwest Regional in Omaha, Neb., on March 20. The team has now posted back-to-back 20-win seasons for the first time in nearly 20 years, while the 10 conference wins tie the 2006-07 squad for the best league record in the Big 12 era. The third-place finish is the best since the inception of the Big 12 and the highest since the 1988-89 team finished third in the Big Eight.

The NBA Draft is scheduled for Thursday, June 26, at Madison Square Garden in New York City.

This K-State alumni got great enjoyment out of watching the 1st K-State-KU game this year- it was a well-played game and my team won. But- I also equally appreciated the Final Four games and enjoyed seeing KU pull it off. Let's keep all this in perspective - basketball isn't everything. As for Michael Beasleys' level of intelligence- it wouldn't be a very wise decision to play another year of college ball and risk a career-ending injury doing it. He's just protecting his best interests and those of his family. Let's not be too critical- he's just a kid; a big, extremely talented one!

Good for Beasly..Good for anyone that can go to the NBA early. Why stick around and chance a carrer ending injury. If he fails or gets hurt in the NBA he can always go back to school.

Hey M, why are KU fans running their mouths? Oh I know, thats what they always do. KSU did nothing? They beat KU or did you miss that game. I take it you are a KU fan and here you are running your mouth. Sounds like your a thug.

Posted by: Cam Location: local on Apr 16, 2008 at 09:58 AM
why does everyone want to fight about KU and KSU? Everyone has a certain team they like and that is a good thing.....it would be a pretty boring world if we all liked the same team. As for a college player going to the NBA early whether it be from KU or K-state.....if they can go and have the talent that is great for them. I wish each and every one of them luck and they will most certainly be missed by us die hard college basketball fans. GOOD LUCK TO ALL!!

Walker is a thug and has no sportsmanship. Bealsey showed a lot of class this year. KU won the championship and KSU had the best player in the country and did nothing. So why are KSU fans running their mouths?

Posted by: Anonymous on Apr 15, 2008 at 09:44 PM
Wow, KU people sure aren't very friendly. They worry about things that don't affect them. What happened, did Michael take your lunch money or something? Why can't you just be glad for him. He's a great basketball player and deserving to go to the NBA.

Posted by: Anonymous on Apr 15, 2008 at 09:38 PM
I also wonder what rock chalk means. You rock them then dust them with chalk? Doesn't make sense.

Posted by: Anonymous on Apr 15, 2008 at 09:37 PM
When Brandon Rush and a few of the other KU players enter the NBA draft, should they also pay back their scholarship? Or is it just KSU players that should have to do that. Just wondering. Wouldn't want to rip off the average Joe needing a scholarship.

Posted by: Anonymous on Apr 15, 2008 at 09:34 PM
The KU players don't sound too smart talking either. Oh and what's all that with Talib? Probably was using the whole time don't you bet? What are you kidding me, did KU win the NCAA? WOW

Posted by: Anonymous on Apr 15, 2008 at 09:32 PM
Hey Tal, what did you want him to say. No we are going to lose to KU. You don't sound so classy yourself. And what the heck is rock chalk, is that like a chalk board or something. Doesn't make sense.

Posted by: Anonymous on Apr 15, 2008 at 08:35 PM
KU fans sure worry about Michael Beasley alot don't they. Why? They take every chance to try to degrade him. You guys have problems. Move on.

Posted by: Tal Location: local on Apr 15, 2008 at 08:35 PM
OK, blame his stupid answers on the reporters stupid questions...HA! A classy player would not answer the way he did. Yes they did beat KU once this year but what happened to the other wins he said would happen.........hum...didn't happen did it....Guess who has the 2008 NCAA Championship trophy...KU does.....ROCK CHALK JAYHAWKS!!!!

Posted by: Anonymous on Apr 15, 2008 at 08:26 PM
We are just as sick of hearing about KU also. Over and done with. Who cares?

Posted by: Lester Location: Topeka on Apr 15, 2008 at 05:00 PM
Glad to see he's going into the draft, we're sick of hearing about him all the time on TV... Rock Chalk Jayhawk!

Posted by: Anonymous on Apr 15, 2008 at 04:35 PM
Hey M, I bet your a classy fellow yourself. I think what everybody forgets is that these are just kids trying to make their way. How would you like it if the media is always watching you. What classy things have you done in your life M? Personally, I like Bill Walker and I enjoy listening to him. He does get a little attitude going once in awhile because he is so competitive. Nothing wrong with that.

Posted by: Anonymous on Apr 15, 2008 at 04:28 PM
KU classy? That's a laugh. I'm sorry your a KU fan, maybe you'll out grow it. What do you want him to say when stupid reporters ask stupid questions. You want him to say no...we aren't very good,we can't beat anybody. STUPID! The fact is they did beat KU this year. It's a split so get over it. Michael Beasley did nothing wrong. He's a great kid on his way to a career in the NBA. Where he should be.

Posted by: Anonymous on Apr 15, 2008 at 04:19 PM
Michael Beasley is no different then any other college player. They have to attend one year to play in the NBA. Brandon Rush was going to the NBA last year until he got hurt and for sure will be gone this year. Didn't hear anybody complain about that. Sounds like sour KU fans to me. Lots of kids accept college scholarships and end up never graduating because they drop out or flunk out. They don't have to pay that back. Get over it. Nothing wrong here.

Posted by: J on Apr 15, 2008 at 04:11 PM
It takes more than just one player to make a team. Too many kids look at the money and not their future. If he received scholarship, he should pay it back. We need more than just good 3 point makers in this country. I pray he has a plan other than money and fame!

Posted by: Anonymous on Apr 15, 2008 at 01:06 PM
G - Do you have a college education? I doubt it. The rule is he had to attend college one year to play in the NBA. He will make more money playing his "dumb sport" then you will ever make in your life time. This is nothing new. Where do you think the NBA gets their players goof ball.

Beasley accepted a scholarship and uses it for 1 yr then heads off to the draft. Just how many students did he knock out of a possilbe scholarship that would have been serious about a 4 yr education? Maybe if 1 gets a scholarship they also need to sign a 2 or 4 years agreement to actually use it and stay for an education. Too many students are serios about an education to let players like Beasley and Walker abuse the scholarship. If they get a scholarship and stay for just 1 yr and go on to professional sports, maybe they should be penalized and make them pay the school for the full 4 years of education...Then put that money in a fund to give serious students scholarships!!

hey anonymous.....why would T.C. be jealous of that thing.....he may be a good player in college but he did say things he could not back up this year and you know it. He will get his attitude changed when he goes to play with the big boys and he my not even be a factor in the NBA so we may not hear much about him. As for the comment made by wildcat78........KU ALWAYS EXHIBITS CLASS!! So I will wear my KU colors........you stick to your purple.

Posted by: M Location: Topeka on Apr 15, 2008 at 09:51 AM
You mean like the class Bill Walker showed this year... Give me a break. Beasley should go pro because he was the best player in the country...

Posted by: KSKat Location: NE KS on Apr 15, 2008 at 08:57 AM
How I truly enjoy reading the Beasley fans comments. wildcat78....you sure managed to do a "back door" slam to KU...team and fans didn't you? Take your own advice...regarding making "negative comments". KU didn't need a player like Beasely, thank goodness. KU has an ENTIRE TEAM who kicked butt, took names and left a print. Wear KU "garbage"? What a nice statement to make. "Go ahead and BRAG"....darn tootin KU fans will. We deserve to and have that right to. KU having no class? Oh, you have got to be kidding me. I have yet to see or hear a K-State fan having class. Your comments just proved it. Typical K-State fan (?) trying to find something or anything rude or nasty to say about KU...school, coaches, players or fans.

Posted by: g on Apr 15, 2008 at 05:54 AM
He probably wasn't making good enough grades to stay in school where he should be. Education is more important than some dumb sport.

Posted by: wildcat78 Location: Kansas on Apr 15, 2008 at 12:00 AM
Those negative comments are not appropriate unless you personally know Michael. He made the decision he thinks is right for him based on what is going on right now. KU-I'd still be worried as you will never have or exhibit the class shown this year on the Wildcat team. Your negative comments simply show jealously because you didn't have a player like Michael. When will you learn that there is more to life than what you think is important. So go ahead-brag and wear you KU garbage. K-Staters can be happy in the fact we had Michael for a year. Winning is important but it isn't everything. His one year at K-State is probably equal to 4 at KU! Good Luck Michael. We in Wildcat land will be watching with pride. Thanks for the memories. Remember-once a Wildcat always a Wildcat.

Congrats to Michael Beasley. He is a class act and good role model for kids. He will do great in the NBA.

Posted by: Anonymous on Apr 14, 2008 at 11:10 PM
TC - when did Mike Beasley ever shoot his mouth off? Oh, I know---NEVER! Are you jealous of him or something?

Posted by: Anonymous on Apr 14, 2008 at 11:09 PM
Hey Joe, where did you learn to write. Michael Beasley is the best player in college. Do you know the game of basketball or not? He carried his team all year. He is good enough and should go to the NBA and make his fortune. KU had a good team but no outstanding players like Michael Beasley. Get real!

Posted by: Anonymous on Apr 14, 2008 at 11:04 PM
I've never heard Michael Beasley say anything rude. He is just 19 years old. You people must of forgot what its like to be 19. I think he was a class act all the way. Congrats to him. And no, there are no KU players better then Michael. They had a better team overall but no one could guard Michael Beasley on the KU team. Ask Bill Self. Michael not good enough? What have you been smoking. He will be the 1 or 2 draft pick in the NBA idiot!

Posted by: joe Location: ks on Apr 14, 2008 at 10:06 PM
he shouldnt go to the pros ku players are better then micheal ku went to champ and micheal didnt shows he not good enough

Posted by: T.C. Location: local on Apr 14, 2008 at 07:01 PM
I am glad to see him go to the NBA.........hope he learns to control his mouth!
