Kansans can do their part to help victims of Hurricane Katrina.

Community Blood Center
People in Topeka can give the gift of life by donating blood to the hurricane victims. The Community Blood Center is located at 800 SW Lane. They can be reached at (785) 233-0195.

American Red Cross:
Blood Donations to the American Red Cross are always welcome. People can also make monetary donations to the Disaster Relief Fund at www.redcross.org . You can also call 1-800-HELP-NOW. The Red Cross cannot accept food or clothing donations.

Salvation Army:
The Salvation Army, Sam's Club and Wal-Mart are also taking monetary Donations for hurricane victims. You can call 1-800-SAL-ARMY to make donations or go to their web site at www.usc.salvationarmy.org

When you make a donation, the Salvation Army asks you to single out your donation for the hurricane victims. Topeka's Salvation Army is not taking any clothing or non-perishable items at this time.

Check on Family Members:
Those who are worried about family members in hurricane areas can inquire about them at www.satern.org or (847) 709-6700.

Beware of Charity Scams:
Although we all want to help the storm victims, there are certain charity scams to be weary of. Attorney General Phill Kline offers these tips:

*Be cautious of phone calls and e-mails asking for money
*Never give anyone your personal bank information
*Check out legitimate charitable organizations at www.ksag.org

Stay Home:
The Kansas Emergency Management (KDEM) are encouraging those who wish to help to stay home juntil asked. Maj. Gen. Tod Bunting says "there will probably be opportunities for people to volunteer, but right now, we need to let the professionals do their job... Too many untrained volunteers rushing in can create problems."

Help is on the Way:
Governor Kathleen Sebelius has offered to send Kansas National Guard units to help with the hurricane disaster on the Gulf Coast. Sebelius made the offer of assistance in rescue and recovery in calls today to the governors of Louisiana and Mississippi.
