TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) _ The Senate is debating a business-backed bill dealing with illegal immigration with some members wanting to make the measure tougher.

Dealing with illegal immigration has been high on the agenda of many legislators. They say they're responding to constituents' concerns about the increased number of illegal immigrants in Kansas. Some estimates put the number at 90,000.

Supporters of stricter laws say neighboring states like Oklahoma and Colorado have enacted tougher statutes dealing with the illegal immigrants and unless Kansas does the same, it will become a magnet
for illegal immigration.

The bill debated by senators underwent massive changes in committee, upsetting its sponsors.

i hear on the news lawmakers will have a immigration law some what like oklahoma. think topeka is going down hill wait till that immigration law startes. topeka will look like someone drop a bomb on it. i hear people all the time they don't like what topeka is doing. plan on eating at home after church on sundays. and for that matter any time after that immigration law startes.thanksgiving and christmas and newyears eat at home because all or most resturants will be closed no help. and i hear a trucker strike first of april it won't stop there. just like tulsa okla my family down there say its a living hell and wores everyday. its coming topeka mark my words for you that can't see american familys leaving topeka you will. not just the illegals. the american grandparents of those kids and the mom or dad of those kids. ya i know there are people out there that say that is not going to happen. well that shows you how dum they are and heartless too. if you love your family you say together.

"still think the illegals are being treated fairly. "?? ...say what?? Whoaaaa bessy. Where did ILLEGAL and FAIR ever come together?? If you/they want to become legal, THEN fair... according to law, will kick in! Then and only then can there be a legitmate complaint about how you/they are being treated!

this country has been finger pointing at the illegals for everything.from the price of gas,the price of food, and welfare, car insurance, the price of renting a home. you know the old saying when you point the finger at someone you have three fingers pointing back at you!! we have been wasting a lot of money on a border fence. and paying immigration and ice police and what do they do immigration worker has a illegal women give him oral sex and wants it more than one time. and a ice officer rapes a illegal women he has arrested. and how many more out there not reported. whats that tell you about immigration. still think the illegals are being treated fairly. looks like there the ones that can't keep there pants up. i have family in tulsa that they waste so much money on the illegals. they don't have money to fix there holes in the streets. we have not seen the worst of it yet topeka next to see how important the illegals were to the economy no produce in the stores.

Jerry round up the wagons and head them south, it wont happen and you know it. I am against any family cheating and being on welfare falsly. Those taxs are a drain on my family and I have worked with many of them and it makes me made to think I am paying their way. Earned income credits at tax refund time do the same. I see people getting back 3-4 or 5,000 due to not keeping their pants up and it makes me made. People know they are here illegally and are aware of the consequences. They came here to have that kid so I would pay for it. It won't be long it will be worse here than in Mexico because of the freebies given. There is a limit to what people can pay and you better consider that. The way you are carrying on are you "legal" ?

There’s a difference, IMO, between an illegal immigrant and illegal immigration. An illegal immigrant is just a person taking advantage of a given situation to better his/her life ( in most cases )…..I can’t really fault them for that. Illegal immigration ,on the other hand, is a failure of governmental policy……..and that’s our fault for allowing it to continue unchecked. Like any law, either use it or take it off the books…….but, most importantly, make a decission one way or the other. All this debating is not getting anyone anywhere.

"illegal immigration" says nothing about mexican, as you said jerry. Its illegal, no matter where they've come from! Quit with the race whine. It's not about "race"! Every race sucks off the welfare system! Thats why it is broken, and needs overhauled! duh! All the laws in the world do no good, unless they are enforced. But that is another subject.

to anonymous, you think its all right for a white american family to get welfare. and use welfare checks to buy big screen tvs. and to lie to srs about there under the table income. oh its ok there americans they can milk the old welfare cow dry. its ok kansas tax payers will be glad to pay for that do ya think. the state of kansas don't want to think about the millions and millions. of able body americans that are able to work but like the welfare cow better. thats the real problem with kansas and the country. but it is easyer to blame illegals for the mess with welfare. bussiness are needing help right now where are those looking for work. setting on there butts at home waiting on the mailman to bring them there welfare check. and boy they get mad when that sucker is late with the mail. i go by the srs office here i see white and black americans going in. but thats ok right there americans they can have all they want. you say i will pay taxes for lazy americans to have welfare babies.

I am tried of working every day to pay my taxes so we can give it to illegals for welfare. I know women and there daughters in this town marry men from mexico so they can stay here and then get a divorce. A women I work with have done this 4 times. She is helping ones that can not understand English to sign up for welfare

for the past 2 yrs. i have been reading comments on tulsaworld.com. where they have the immigration law hb 1804. people of topeka and kansas need to read those comments. and see all the hate they have on mexicans. they wish on some of those comments that they could do harm to the mexicans. and have a law saying its ok to do so. if there words were guns there would be thousands of dead mexicans in tulsa oklahoma. at last count over 300 comments of hate on there story about 1.8 billion cost to there economy. right now topeka is some what lucky that the hate comments here havev't got like tulsa. if kansas lawmakers pass a immigration law like oklahoma there's going to be big trouble for those of us in topeka. do you want that to happen because it will. then you will have a bigger mess then you have now. i don't think people care about the little kids its going to hurt. mexicans kids are not trash and there parents for that matter. why can't we have peace and help them get legal!!!!!!!!!!!!

Just what part of "illegal" does no one understand? Come on lawmakers, step up! Bring your brass b**** and pass a "illegal" immigration law! My future votes will definitly be guided by who votes how is this deal. Your all so eager to pass frivolous laws, that dont matter, put those aside and do the right thing for a change! Don't chop it to pieces because a company that you have a vote from might get caught, give Kansans something to be proud of! (for a change)

to luke of marysville, i guess you don't know any american familys here that have family ties with those here from mexico. i do 50 familys already have left topeka for el paso. and to say they are driving down wages is wrong. i know people here making 8.00 hr. and the american worker wants easyer work and set there own hours to work. the mexicans are happy with all hours they can work without crying about like the americans do. most americans can make more excuess why they can't come to work. where my sister works they find there american workers out back talking to there girl friends on cell phones. three where fired there last week. two years ago when gas was going up guys were telling me at the gas station. that those illegals were making the gas prices high. and that if they go back to mexico gas would go back to 1.00 a gal. thats wrong go to tulsaworld.com where they have that immigration law. and read all the hate comments about illegals they want the death sentence on onecomment.

In reply to Jerry's comment. Illegal immigrants are exactly that, here illegally. Just because they may have family here, or whatever, doesn't make it ok for them to live here. That is a very poor arguement. If they or their families want them to be here that badly then they will find a way to do it legally. I doubt that many legal Kansas families will go to Texas, as you said, to be closer to their families. Secondly, we are probably loosing more in welfare costs and lack of income taxes because of these 90,000 illegals, than we would ever loose in sales taxes by kicking them out or making it harder for them to come in. Illegal immigrants drive wages down, drive insurance costs up, and cost state and federal governments millions in welfare costs each year. It is not fair to those that go through the process legally, for us to continue to allow illegals to stay in our state/country without any consequence.

kansas lawmakers you pass a immigration law like oklahoma. you are going to see a wagon train of uhaul trucks going to texas border towns this summer. if there kids or grandkids go to mexico there will be no reason for familys to stay in topeka or kansas. right now its 725.00 for a round trip ticket to mexico. thats for one person 90,000 tickets thats a lot of money for family members to pay. to go see family in mexico. you know obama and clinton want to work on the border first and then help those that are here to get legal. thats going to be all mess up with a immigration law like oklahoma has but you don't care there not your family members just there money. you want there money and thats it. you see now why christmas sales was down this past year look for the same or wores this year. lets see how the mexican fiesta does this year it might be its last year. with all the hate for mexicans. lets see what easttopeka looks like after a ghost town empty buildings and homes.

this story is saying there is 90,000 illegals. how many americans familys that have family ties with those 90,000. nobody wants to talk about them its like to hell with them. grandparents can go without there grandkids and mom or dad can go without there kids. what can of world are we becoming. and the united states doesn't want american money going to mexico. do you want those familys to say to hell with you family. i will tell you right now thats not going to happen thats a fact. americans familys here will pack up loosing there homes to the banks. and move to the border towns in texas to be near there familys in mexico. and topeka and kansas will loose familys and tax dollars. tulsaworld.com is saying right now that sales tax is at a record low. want that here in topeka streets won't get fixed that way. and the bridges in kansas won't get replace.you are going to take it out on the tax payer any way.
