TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) _ The Senate is debating a business-backed bill dealing with illegal immigration with some members wanting to make the measure tougher.
Dealing with illegal immigration has been high on the agenda of many legislators. They say they're responding to constituents' concerns about the increased number of illegal immigrants in Kansas. Some estimates put the number at 90,000.
Supporters of stricter laws say neighboring states like Oklahoma and Colorado have enacted tougher statutes dealing with the illegal immigrants and unless Kansas does the same, it will become a magnet
for illegal immigration.
The bill debated by senators underwent massive changes in committee, upsetting its sponsors.
