GREAT BEND, Kan. (AP) _ A former elementary school principal is facing 63 counts of theft stemming from $41,000 swiped from the Great Bend PTA and student council.

Prosecutors say former Jefferson Elementary School Principal Don Atkinson stole the money between 2002 and 2007. Barton County Attorney Doug Matthews said Atkinson turned himself in last weekend and posted a $25,000 bond.

Atkinson resigned last November after PTA leaders went to school administrators, who called authorities. He had worked in USD 428 in Great Bend for 28 years.

Matthews said 17 of the charges against Atkinson are felonies and 46 are misdemeanors.

Each felony carries a sentence of five to 17 months behind bars, while each misdemeanor could carry a maximum sentence of a year in jail.

It saddens me as an educator that teachers/administrators are all getting lumped together and assumed to be immoral. I have worked in public education for nearly 20 years and know many outstanding teachers/administrators, unfortunately, like all professions a few can ruin it for the greater population. Please remember that a couple "bad eggs" don't represent the entire population. Not all schools need investigated but if there are improprieties then by all means investgate and punish.

Looks like these SCHOOLS need financial OVERSIGHT. This is the second RECENT incident of theft involving a school offical. The school district in Wabaunsee county just recently FIRED someone for THEFT.

How bad are we getting as a society when we cannot even trust our teacher's with students and sexual escapades and now pricipals with money in our schools. This and the situation at Mission Valley where the kleptomaniacal Pricipal was caught on tape stealing money out of the staff's purses. This wreaks of maybe our school district's not checking out these principal's background a little more in depth. Maybe some type of psychiatric evaluation would suffice for people applying to places for positions as Pricipal's.
