The trial of two former Westar executives continued yesterday in federal court in Kansas City, Kansas.
Prosecutors accuse David Wittig and Douglas Lake of using company planes for personal travel, increasing their own compensation and attempting to cash in on a proposed merger - all while Westar's stock price plummeted and corporate debt ballooned. Wittig is Westar's former chairman and chief executive officers. And Lake is the company's former executive vice president and chief strategy officer.
Among the witnesses yesterday was accountant John Meara. He told jurors that Westar planes landed at airports that were closer to the New York home of Lake and the summer home of Wittig than to the
New York business district.
