Kansas Treasurer Lynn Jenkins testifies in the federal fraud retrial of former Westar Energy executives David Wittig and Douglas Lake.
Testifying as a prosecution rebuttal witness, Jenkins said the two men tried to use her to gain influence with the Kansas Corporation Commission while she was a state senator in 2001.
Jenkins also said Wittig also attempted to use her sister, the chief counsel and acting chief of staff for then-Governor Bill Graves, to influence the KCC.
Prosecutors accuse Wittig and Lake of trying to loot Kansas' largest electrical utility for their own personal gain.
Both say their actions were legal, accompanied by the proper public notice and approved by the company's board. In their first trial, a jury last fall deadlocked on more than half of the charges.
