Commercial Pilot Refuses to Leave Marquette, KS
For Marquette pilot, all points lead back to his hometown Reporter: AP |
|
When Dixon Johnson pilots a commercial jet from the West Coast, he lets the passengers know when they're
flying over Marquette.
Johnson imagines the passengers asking themselves where
Marquette is and why he'd bother to point it out to them.
But that doesn't bother him.
The American Airlines pilot takes every opportunity to promote
his McPherson County hometown, from which he commutes more than 450 miles to work each week.
Johnson sleeps in a small St. Louis apartment, then flies from
Wichita to back on Kansas soil, drives the hour-long trip north on
I-135 to Lindsborg, then heads eight miles west to the place he
considers a well-kept secret.
Certainly, he loves every opportunity to travel. With his career
he could live anywhere, but Johnson appreciates Johnson how his
history is woven into the town.
