Officials have estimated it would cost $100 million to bring the hall to the Village West retail district in Kansas City, Kansas. They predict at least 500,000 NASCAR fans would visit the hall in its first year of operation.
Leaders of a team that wants to build a NASCAR Hall of Fame near Kansas Speedway say the area has a good shot at landing the coveted shrine to auto racing.
Billing Kansas City as the ``Infield of North America,'' proponents said it makes sense to locate the Hall of Fame in the center of the U.S., where more people have access to it.
The other sites submitting bids are Atlanta; Michigan; Richmond,
Virginia; Daytona Beach, Florida; and Charlotte, North Carolina.
The bid proposes a 130,000-square-foot building near interstates 70 and 435 east of Kansas Speedway. At night a six-story wall of cars inside the $100 million structure would be illuminated and visible from the highways.
The facility would also feature a virtual reality ride and holographic images of some of the sport's most famous drivers.
NASCAR expects to make its final decision by the end of the
year.
