Valley Falls Copes with Tragedy

The Valley Falls community is coping with the loss of 18-year-old Cameron Bickford. The Valley Falls High School senior died Saturday night in a car accident.

"He's the type of kid everybody wants to have in their school," said Valley Falls Principal Jacques Molleker. "If you had 200 like him you would be really happy."

Cameron was killed when the vehicle in which he was riding left the highway and rolled. The driver, 19-year-old Jabob Kearney, remains in the Stormont-Vail Health Care in Topeka. The other passenger, 15-year-old Hannah Navinskey, was also injured in the accident. She has been released from the hospital.

In the wake of Saturday's accident, several counselors are available to help students at Valley Falls High. Counselor Joe LaLonde said many students are in a state of shock after hearing the news.

"A lot of kids aren't going to react to it right now," LaLonde said. "They're going to be numb."

Students are asking the crowd at Tuesday night's basketball game to wear black and the number 13 to remember Cameron. The game begins at 6 p.m. Cameron was both a basketball player and a member of the Dragon football team.

"This is something you don't want to see happen. It's devastating for the school," Molleker said. "We've suffered a real loss here."
