Brenna Morgart's Family Mourning, But Showing Compassion, Pastor Says

TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) - Brenna Morgart was the type of girl that friends and neighbors say could light up a room.

"She just had this gift of making the person she talked to feel connected and that she was genuinely caring about them," Pastor R.D. Cogswell, the lead pastor at Northland Christian Church and a family friend of the Morgart family, said.

Morgart was a recent Seaman graduate, graduating summa cum laude. She was Homecoming Queen last year, a lifeguard and a Sunday school kindergarten teacher at Northland Christian Church - in short an All-American girl.

Dustin Leftwich, 20 years old, a Seaman High School graduate of 2010, is facing charges in connection with her death, including first degree murder and kidnapping.

Law enforcement personnel and the Seaman community conducted a massive search for Morgart Friday.

The search ended, when Leftwich's parents contacted authorities and said their son was involved in the collision in the 6800 block of Northwest Jennings Road.

"This one is really difficult because you are talking about two Seaman grads only separated by two years," Cogswell said.

Morgart's body had been moved three miles from the collision scene in the 6600 block of Northwest Huxman.

Cogswell, who is speaking on behalf of the Morgart family, said they are finding compassion during a difficult time.

"They are very concerned with the driver and know that he must going through difficult time," he said, adding that the Morgarts find solace knowing their angel is with god.

"Barb and Dennis are extremely sad," he said referring to Brenna Morgart's parents.

"It's not the storybook ending to the life they were choosing for their daughter. But there's also hope. Brenna had a relationship with Jesus Christ," he said. "Because of that hope, the Morgarts now know Brenna is in a better place. It doesn't take the pain away, but sure bring some comfort and peace, knowing that where Brenna is is amazing."

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on May 30, at Northland Christian Church on 3102 Northwest Topeka Boulevard. Brenna Morgart will lie in state from 1 to 8pm Tuesday, with visitation hours from 6p - 8p, also at the church. Memorials may be made to the Northland Christian Church Student Activity Scholarship Fund and sent in care of the Davidson Funeral Home, 1035 N. Kansas Ave, 66608
