A bill allowing casinos in five areas of the state and slot machines at race tracks won a Senate committee's endorsement Wednesday. It's the first significant legislative action on gambling this year. Following the Ways and Means Committee's voice vote, the entire Senate is expected to debate the measure Friday. The proposal was dubbed ``Slots for Tots,'' because the state's share of revenue from the new gambling would go to education. Supporters estimate it would be $150 million in the fiscal year beginning July first. The bill would permit casinos in the Dodge City, Junction City, Kansas City, Pittburg and Wichita areas. Local voters would have to approve first. The state would receive 78 percent of the net revenues from the new gambling.
