Kansas City's Boulevard Brewing is spending $20 million on an expansion that it says will enable it to boost production to 600,000 barrels a year.
This year's output is expected to be just over 100,000 barrels. The expansion project is expected to be completed next year.
The microbrewery began operations on Kansas City's Southwest
Boulevard in 1989. It now sells beer in eleven Midwestern states,
recently adding North Dakota.
Boulevard produced just 1,700 barrels its first year, and has had growth of 15 to 20 percent annually for each of the last nine years. The 2004 production was just under 90,000 barrels.
