Topeka, Kan. (WIBW) - The best spellers in Shawnee County competed in the 59th annual Shawnee County Spelling Bee on Saturday.

More than 80 students from schools around Shawnee County registered to compete in the competition which took place at Whitson Elementary School.

First Place went to Anjum Syed who is an 8th grader at Topeka Collegiate School. Veronica Lyle, who is a 7th grader at Mater Dei Catholic School, came in second place. They won the right to represent Shawnee County at the 59th Annual Regional Spelling Bee which will be held on March 3 at Topeka West High School.

The winner of that bee will go on to the Scripps National Bee in Washington, D.C. on May 29-June 2, 2012.

Third Place- Kenzie Kriss, 8th grade at Silver Lake Jr. High
Fourth Place- Jose Alaras, 8th grade at Washburn Middle School
Fifth Place- Ora Kleckner, 7th grade at Robinson Middle School
Sixth Place- Shyanne Osterhausr, 7th grade at Seaman Middle School
Jason Mitchiner, 6th grade at Logan Elementary
Jenna Eubanks, 5th grade at Heritage Christian School
Christopher Anerson, 8th grade at Silver Lake Jr. High
