Kansas City's outspoken archbishop is retiring.

Archbishop James Keleher has overseen the northeast Kansas archdiocese since 1993.

The Vatican today said Pope John Paul the Second has accepted Keleher's request to retire.

The 73-year-old Keleher is known for the his strong opposition to abortion and had asked Roman Catholic institutions in his archdiocese to stop inviting politicians and others who support abortion rights.

In 2003, he asked Governor Sebelius, a Catholic who supports abortion rights, to move an inauguration interfaith service from the Catholic church she attends in Topeka. She refused.

Monsignor Joseph Naumann will succeed Keleher in the diocese, which includes 200,000 Catholics.
