POTTAWATOMIE COUNTY, Kan. (WIBW) -- A St. Mary's teenager is facing charges in connection with a burglary at a local funeral home.

Officials say a police officer spotted stolen items in the teen's car during a traffic stop.

On Tuesday Pottawatomie County Sheriff Greg Riat released the following statement to local media outlets:

"A 17 year old Juvenile has been taken into custody for Burglary, Theft, and Criminal Damage to Property in regards to the Burglary of the Piper Funeral Home, St.Mary's Kansas.

On November 12, 2011 a Lenexa Police Officer stopped a speeding vehicle. The Officer noticed in plain view several flat screen televisions. The Officer identified the driver of the vehicle as 17 year old Carlos Gonzalez, a juvenile male from St.Mary's. In addition, there was a 19 year old male passenger.

The Lenexa Police officer, having spotted the flat screen televisions inside the vehicle, contacted the Pottawatomie County Sheriff Dispatch. The Dispatcher on duty informed the Lenexa Officer of the recent burglary in St.Mary's. Based on further investigation between Lenexa and Pottawatomie County Sheriff's Investigations, Gonzalez was arrested. Gonzalez has been brought back to Pottawatomie County and is now being held in a Juvenile Detention Facility. Gonzalez has been formally charged by the Pottawatomie County Attorney with Burglary, Theft and Criminal Damage to Property."

Sheriff Riat's original press release on the burglary at the funeral home stated: "The Pottawatomie County Sheriff's Office and the St.Mary's Police Department are investigating a burglary to the Piper Funeral Home located at 714 West Maple, St. Marys, Kansas. Sometime late Wednesday or early Thursday 11/10/2011 unknown person or persons forced entry into the business and removed 6 flat screen TV's, a coffee pot, a radio and an undetermined amount of cash.
