WICHITA, Kan. (AP) _ A federal judge in Wichita is ordering a doctor and his nurse wife to remain in jail until their trial.
Dr. Stephen Schneider and his wife, Linda, are accused of operating a so-called ``pill mill'' in a scheme that allegedly caused the overdose deaths of at least four patients.
Magistrate Judge Donald Bostwick says they are a flight risk and a danger to the community.
The two pleaded not guilty in U.S. District Court today on counts including conspiracy, unlawful distribution of a controlled substance, health care fraud and money laundering.
The indictment says 56 patients died from accidental prescription-drug overdoses in the past five years.
But the indictment alleges that only four of the deaths were directly caused by drugs prescribed by Schneider's clinic in Haysville, south of Wichita.
