More than 1300 additional troops are about to call Fort Riley home as part of the Big Red One's relocation to the Kansas army post. The fort expected to reach the 18,000 mark by 2013, but Senator Pat Roberts says a new engineering battalion will boost the number. The 1st Infantry Division had been at Fort Riley for about 40 years, but its headquarters moved to Germany in 1995 before returning to Kansas last year. It's part of the national military base realignment process.
The unit's return is set to double the size of Fort Riley's military population. Nearly the entire division will be stationed here, except for the 3rd Brigade Combat Team, which is stationed at Fort Hood, Texas.
