Atty. Gen. Paul Morrison Resigns Save Email Print
Posted: 3:10 PM Dec 14, 2007

A | A | A

Attorney General Paul Morrison stepped down from a position to which he was elected just over a year ago, "not because I have ever done anything contrary to the laws of this state or the ethical standards of my profession, but because law enforcement should be the focus of this office, not my personal life."

Should Morrison have resigned?
Yes
No
Not sure

He will step down on January 31st, 2008, a date which will allow him to finish prosecuting the Jodi Sanderholm murder case in Cowley County.

"Because of my actions in my personal life, many people have stopped believing in me which is damaging the office, my staff and the State," Morrison said.

"My actions caused pain and Sadness to many people I love," the Attorney General continued. "After careful thought and deliberation, I have concluded that my resignation is in the best long-term interests of the of the people of Kansas."

The resignation comes after revelations of an affair between Attorney General Paul Morrison and a former staffer, Linda Carter, coupled with her allegations of sexual harassment and attempts by Morrison to use his influence in a federal investigation against Johnson County District Attorney Phill Kline.

Governor Sebelius, who had said earlier this week that the Attorney General should resign if the allegations that he tried to interfere with a federal investigation are proven true, said she "respect(s) Paul Morrison's decision to step down as Attorney General," and that "Kansans are are grateful to Paul for his twenty-seven years in law enforcement, serving the people of Kansas.'

According to Kansas law, the Governor now will appoint Morrison's replacement, provided that individual meets the state's qualifications for attorney general, who will serve the duration of the term."

Carter asserted that Morrison tried to persuade her to write letters on behalf of eight former employees fired by Kline after he took over the District Attorney's seat from Morrison, who had defeated Kline last November in the race for Attorney General.

Morrison had denied both the charges that he harassed Carter and that he weighed in on the Federal investigation into Kline.

According to Carter's account, the affair began in September 2005 and lasted about two years, while Morrison was running for attorney general and after he took office.

Reactions to Atty. Gen. Morrison's announcement:

Governor Kathleen Sebelius

Kansas House Speaker Melvin Neufeld

Senate Democratic Leader Anthony Hensley

Reacting to Morrison's announcement, Kansas House Speaker Melvin Neufeld (R-Ingalls) said the Attorney General's resignation was "in the best interest of the State of Kansas and his family.

"Kansas needs an attorney general who can focus on the duties of the office and the legal needs of the state. It is clear this is not possible for Mr. Morrison to do."

Neufeld added that he sees no need for the Kansas legislature to get involved with any of the pending investigations., but that the legislature may want to look into the procedures for filling vacancies."

Morrison's down fall definently has Kline's writting all over it. It takes two to tango. Carter needs to own up to what she did also. At least Morrison wasn't taking money to look up medical records. (Under the table of course.)Morrison may not be perfect but at least he was trying to get the job done correctly. He made a better AG than Kline was trying to be. Hopefully our govenor will pick someone better for the position.

He had to resign. SCANDAL IS RAMPANT. His creditability is GARBAGE. Hopefully, any cases he was working on WON'T get dismissed due to this BLEMISH on the Attorney Generals Office and LAW Enforcement.

I am glad he is gone!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Morrison's political career and stature are all but destroyed - we should leave him alone - he's got a hard enough road ahead of him anyhow

Posted by: one of many Location: kansas on Dec 16, 2007 at 01:08 PM
Would you people just let this Morrison stuff just drop?! The man resigned - he's got several pieces of his life he needs to pick back up - his political career is all but over now - he has been exposed and he will carry this disgrace with him the remainder of his days - I just hope that when you make your next mistake that you are treated with more care than what you are showing Mr. Morrison. As for cliche's - what goes around comes around and by your own standards will it come back on you! Instead of wasting your time by taking pot shots at a man who is already on his way out why don't you make better use of your time by just moving on!!!

This is an unfortunate situation. I would still support Morrison (a better choice over Kline)however the resignation is appropriate if the allegations are true. My issue with this situation is with Carter herself? It takes two to tangle and she is just as guilty knowing she was with a married man! In my book the claim of sexual harassment is just a tactic. It would not surprise me if Kline did not have a hand in this. I wish all involved prayer and healing.

I just love it when other political names are brought into the mix, I will side with tired and Elaine, time to move on people-and Elaine if you want my help to build that bridge-let me put the first nail in ok? (laughs) but I must add another "cliche" from a tv show-"DEAL WITH IT" God bless our troops and their families

Resignation is not enough. The Man has removed any and all doubt. That He's a Lier when it comes to Honesty, character and reputation. He has committed a Crime of Fraud in his marriage; intentional perversion of truth in order to induce another to part with something of value or to surrender a legal right, an act of deceiving or misrepresenting. Especially for an Attorney General. As a Kansas Voter I want the Bar Raised..Not lowered.

I BELIEVE IT TAKES TWO TO TANGO, YES IT WAS WRONG, BUT I BELIEVE HE'S WAS THE MAN FOR THE JOB AND KANSAS NEEDED HIM. HOPEFULLY WE WILL MOVE FORWARD, AND HIS FAMILY WILL ALSO.

The media needs to now focus on some other news worthy story - this story on Morrison is now old news - it's time to move on people. We all have better things to do than read/hear the same old story over and over.

I have to agree with David's post below....2 years and she just now figured out that she was harassed??? hummmmmmmm Seems to me there is more to this story, and i'll bet Kline isnt far from setting this up on Morrison. All 3 "clinton cousins" need to disappear from public service!!

He has already admitted to adultery - that, while some in the general public do not seemingly think is “breaking the law” -is in fact a “sex offense” in Kansas (as the JOCO DA/KS AG Morrison surely knows; therefore, his actions can only be construed as disregard of the law when it suits his needs). And he continues to “deny the allegations of legal or professional misconduct.” What, then, Mr. Morrison is a class C misdemeanor? Low level? YES. Crime? YES. Legal and professional misconduct? YES. While in office? YES. Grounds for ouster? YES. The fact that he was in a position of authority over the woman involved is even worse (and, no it does not excuse her actions - however, she did not swear an oath to uphold the laws of Kansas as Morrison did)! Chapter 21.—CRIMES AND PUNISHMENT PARTII—PROHIBITED CONDUCT Article 35.—SEX OFFENSES 21-3507. Adultery Perhaps Morrison should hold himself to the same standard he advocates for 10 year old children in Kansas. He believes that a 10 year old has sufficient capacity to know right from wrong and he has strongly advocates their prosecution when they make a mistake. Luckily for him, at 53 y/o, he won't be subjected to the same Constitutional violations and Kangaroo court he established in JOCO for kids.

What difference does it make if he had an affair or not. What he does in his PERSONAL life is NONE of our business. That is the problem with Kansans...you are to interested in what someone else is doing. Why don't you clean up your own back yards first. He did his job for 27 years, and now you want to crucify him because he had an affair. Are YOUR closets skeleton free??? Me thinks not! Leave him alone, MIND YOUR OWN BUSINESS, and build a bridge and get over it!

Posted by: Chris Location: Topeka on Dec 15, 2007 at 01:00 PM
The point is NOT that he fooled around on his wife - while that's bad enough, it's between him and his wife. The media is playing up the affair because it catches the headlines. The IMPORTANT part of this whole thing is that he is now under investigation for BREAKING LAWS! It doesn't matter whether he's the AG or Joe Schmo, tampering with an investigation of any kind is ILLEGAL. If the allegations are proven true - resigning will be the least of his problems.

Gosh If Everyones Private Life Was Out No One would Be In Politics, Kansas Or Anywhere else

Posted by: shelly Location: kansas on Dec 15, 2007 at 05:56 AM
i would like to know when his personal life became out business. i don't feel that what he does in his personal life is any of out business. the question now is going to be when is our personal life going to became the governments business.if he really use this lady for information who cares isn't that part of his job to help catch the bad guys. i seems to me that a whole lots of peolpe in the government are taking a higher moral ground on this and i just can't help wondering what they are hiding. so god help anyone that cast stone on morrison because it just might came back to bit them you know where.

Isn't it amazing how many people think that what a person does in the dark doesn't effect their professional life and hinder their so-called public work? So it would be aok to have a sex offender run a daycare? After all they did the offense on their own time and not on the job. In reality, it does matter what a person's personal character is behind closed doors as well as in the public light. Paul Morrison's personal behavior is a reflection of who he is and how he conducts himself as a elected official. Integrity is integrity.

[If he was my husband, yes,he would be on pins and needles for the rest of his life. But that doesn't mean he would fail the State of Kansas.] The thing is... there is a stark difference between being "YOUR" husband, and being the head of the law enforcement agency of the entire state. If he would lie and deceive his own wife and children, then I have no doubt that he would lie and cheat those of us he has never met. There was once a day when integrity was something we expected from our representatives.

Mr. Morrison did a good thing today by resigning -

Posted by: noname Location: Topeka on Dec 14, 2007 at 07:56 PM
Why didn't Phil Kline resign his term as A.G. when he started exploiting his teenage daughter on TV commercials?Bringing his daughter into the public eye was doing nothing but putting her in harms way. I prayed for her every time I saw the advertisement of how WE should protect OUR children on the internet. Unless she travels everywhere with a troop of body guards at all times, he made her just as vulnerable to predators. As far as Paul Morrison, he, in my eyes,is no different than most other politicians. We would probably be horrified as to how many have never been brought to the publics attention. So, who shall cast the first stone? Why should he step down? If he was my husband, yes,he would be on pins and needles for the rest of his life. But that doesn't mean he would fail the State of Kansas. And Ms. Carter? SHE IS AN INSULT TO WOMEN. SHE HAS BROKEN A SISTERLY BOND of protecting the next woman. She saw nothing but $. He must have ended it, and she retaliated. SHE IS NOT A WOMAN!

It's not the affair David. It's the fact that he tried to interfere with an on going investigation.

Posted by: Larry on Dec 14, 2007 at 07:12 PM
This doesn't surprise me at all. We knew of this particular character defect during the election. As we were shown with Bill Clinton, whoring around on your wife is just

Posted by: Amy Location: Topeka on Dec 14, 2007 at 06:31 PM
Politics does indeed make strange bedfellows; but in this case Ms. Carter and Mr. Kline seems to be a perfect match and cut from the same moral fabric.

Posted by: Melanie Location: Clifton on Dec 14, 2007 at 06:19 PM
I strongly disagree with the previous 2 posters on the blog!! I don't understand why people are always so quick to slam Kline when all he was trying to do was uncover if the abortion clinics in Kansas are BREAKING LAWS!! That's what the Attorney General in the state is supposed to do!! How can people defend Morrison when he has publicly stated that he had an affair with this woman?! He lied to the people of Kansas when he said he didn't have any skeletons in his closet! I believe he lied and cheated his way to get his office and misled Kansans! As he said in his resignation speech, he is trying to get right with God, his family and friends. For his sake I hope he does. But for those reasons, it was the right thing to do to resign. Now I hope Gov. Sebelius does the right thing and picks a person that is more qualified to uphold the standards that this office requires!

Posted by: JC Location: NE Kansas on Dec 14, 2007 at 04:41 PM
So I wonder?... Who will Tillers next pick be now that morrison has been exposed?

Posted by: Chris Location: Topeka on Dec 14, 2007 at 04:32 PM
"I believed Kansans deserved a prosecutor dedicated to putting criminals behind bars, not someone preoccupied with politics" What a load of crap!! Morrison was in office because Tiller bought the election. He served to protect Tiller - not to uphold the laws of Kansas. It'll be interesting to see where the Gov finds another puppet to fill Morrison's shoes.

Posted by: Kate Location: Topeka on Dec 14, 2007 at 04:23 PM
It's ridiculous that someone's personal life became such a public focus. ONe's sexual life is not a reflection of their job performance. There are hundreds of people out there, doing the same thing, but they just don't happen to get caught. Ms. Carter went into this relationship voluntarily; she paid for the hotel rooms, she moved into an apartment, and she did, in fact, publicly humiliate herself by announcing the affair. It appears it was done more out of "woman scorned" than any ethical or illegal wrong doing on Morrison's part.

Posted by: g on Dec 14, 2007 at 04:07 PM
For the sake of all Kansasans, DON'T let Kline get back in as Attorney General. He has a one track mind, if he has a mind all.

Posted by: David Location: Topeka on Dec 14, 2007 at 03:40 PM
How can a woman say she's been sexually harassed by a man she has been having a 2 year long afair with??? What is wrong with that picture? If that claim can be made, then the rest of us in the world have got to be a bunch of idiots to believe it. There is probably more to this story that hasn't come out yet. Makes me wonder if Kline isn't paying or bedding Linda Carter to blackball Morrison!? Kline better watch out, Linda may cry sexual harassment against him too when the time is right.
