A young southeast Kansas man who was babysitting for his girlfriend's infant son has been charged in the child's death.
Zayquon Hammond, who would have turned two next week, was pronounced dead Tuesday of injuries suffered Monday night. Jackson County prosecutors yesterday charged Ryan Wiss, 21, of Pittsburg with second-degree murder, child abuse and endangering the welfare of a child.
Wiss took the child to a fast-food restaurant while his mother was at work Monday. According to court records, Wiss became frustrated because the boy was walking too slowly up the stairs as they returned to the apartment. Wiss is accused of punching the toddler in the stomach, knocking him into the railing and kneeing him.
Police say, the boy lost his balance and fell down to a concrete landing. Wiss carried the boy into the apartment and put him on a mattress. The next morning he was dead. An autopsy showed the boy died from blunt force trauma to his liver and pancreas.
