Biohazard System Being Installed in Kansas City Postal Facility

Kansas City's mail processing center is getting new equipment that will help detect anthrax sent through the mail.

The biohazard detection system already is in place at more than 80 processing centers nationwide. Postal Service officials said today that within the next 18 months, all facilities that handle outgoing mail will be equipped with the technology.

Officials say such detection would be critical in the event of anthrax mailings like those blamed for killing five people in the weeks following 9/11. Officials say the anthrax-tainted letters that were sent out then would have been caught before leaving a postal processing center.
