Officials with Heartland Park Topeka want $5 million from the city to improve their race track.

On Tuesday, owner Raymond Irwin met with the Topeka City Council Eonomic and Community Development Committee. He said the money would go toward making improvements to the road course and allow Heartland Park to attract larger events.

Without the money, Irwin said the track couldn't bid to bring in the Sports Car Club of America, which is headquartered in Topeka.

The full city council took a first look at the funding request during its meeting on Tuesday night.
