A Johnson County jury has convicted a man of killing a 13-year-old girl 30 years ago.

John Henry Horton was found guilty of first-degree murder in the July 1974 death of Lizbeth Wilson. She was last seen crossing a parking lot at Shawnee Mission East High School, where Horton worked as a custodian. Her remains were found six months later in a Lenexa field.

Horton was a suspect in the case 30 years ago, but he wasn't charged until investigators reopened the case last year.

Prosecutors say Horton lured or forced the girl into a vacant school building, where he used chloroform to disable her.

The first-degree felony murder charge carries a sentence of life in prison with no chance of parole for 15 years.
