Kansas Congresswoman Nancy Boyda is speaking out about a CBS News story critical of a funding request she made.
It's an earmark for $100,000 for a prisons museum in Leavenworth County. CBS News questioned spending money on a so-called "fake prison" when real prisons have major structural problems.
Boyda defends the request. She says the local community is raising up to $3 million in private funding for the project to showcase what the area has a 100-year history doing in providing prisons. If they raise the money, Boyda says the federal government will pitch in $100,000 to "honor this history." Boyda says, in light of what the community is doing, she doesn't think the request is out of line.
Boyda does acknowledge prisons have needs and says she's on a corrections caucus addressing those concerns.
