TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) -- Funeral arrangements are set for the 42 year-old man who died Saturday from injuries sustained in a motorcycle crash the previous day. Jerry W. "JJ" Johnston will be remembered during graveside services at Rochester Cemetery on May 2, 2014, at 1:00 p.m., according to the Penwell-Gabel website.
His family will receive friends between 6:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. on Thursday at the Penwell Gabel Southwest Chapel, 3700 SW Wanamaker Road.
Johnston graduated from Santa Fe Trail High School, worked at Topeka Landscape since 2005, and attended Good News Church. He loved working with his hands and creating things of beauty, his obituary said.
According to the Shawnee Co. Sheriff's Office, Johnston was heading east on SW 29th Street when an oncoming SUV turned left in front of his Harley-Davidson, attempting to turn south onto Indian Hills Road.
Johnston's motorcycle hit the side of the Chevrolet Trailblazer, throwing him off of the bike. He suffered unspecified head injuries and was rushed to a Topeka hospital where he died the next day.
A deputy noted the driver of the SUV, 23 year-old Robert Graham, failed to yield before turning.
Johnston was not wearing a helmet at the time, police said.
