Cocaine Smuggler Caught after Ignoring Emergency Vehicle is Sentenced

Posted: 07/08/2008 - 39-year old Vincent Brungardt of Nogales, Arizona was sentenced Monday to five years in federal prison for drug trafficking. He was arrested in January, after driving past a police car pulled to the side of the road with its emergency lights activated.

Suspected Killer of KU Student Was in NJ before Slaying Discovered

Posted: 07/08/2008 - Investigators say Adolfo Garcia-Nunez arrived in New Jersey before authorities discovered the body of Jana Mackey inside his Lawrence home. Authorities believe Garcia-Nunez killed Mackey. He took his own life while in police custody in New Jersey.

Trial in Sanderholm Slaying Won't be Moved

Posted: 07/08/2008 - A Cowley County judge Tuesday denied a motion to move the trial for Justin Thurber. His attorneys argued he couldn't get a fair trial there for the slaying of Jodi Sanderholm. Thurber is accused of kidnapping, raping and killing the 19-year old in January 2007.

Posted: 07/07/2008 - Someone stole catalytic converters from 11 vehicles at the American Red Cross Midway Kansas Chapter in Wichita. While the vehicles are being repaired, the chapter had temporarily canceled its Good Neighbor Nutrition Program which serves 1000 meals a day.

Break in Leads Police on Chase Down Topeka Boulevard

Posted: 07/06/2008 - Topeka Police were called to a residence near the 4600 block of Southwest Topeka Blvd. regarding a break-in just before 7 p.m. That's when they saw a suspect leaving the area. The suspect then led police on a chase with speeds reaching 50 miles per hour.

Posted: 07/04/2008 - Lawrence Police have issued a second degree murder warrant for 46-year old Adolfo Garcai-Nunez. He lived in the home where 25-year old Jana Lynne Mackey was found dead Thursday night. Mackey was a law student at KU.

Police Arrest Federal Fugitive After Three Hour Standoff

Updated: 07/04/2008 - A person believed to be a federal fugitive ran into a home in the 200 block of SE 35th Terrace, Topeka, and held police at bay. Nine made it out of the house. Negotiators later convinced 29-year-old Quinton Lawton to come out of the house shortly before midnight. Lawton was booked into the Department of Corrections on a federal narcotics warrant.
