Would-Be Robber Shoots Out Convenience Store Door Then Flees

JUNCTION CITY, Kan. (WIBW) -- Junction City police are searching for a gunman who tried to rob a local convenience store by shooting out the front door, injuring an employee in the process.

Around 11 PM Sunday, July 15, 2012, officials say a masked man wearing a hoodie tried to enter the Cenex convenience store at 813 South Washington Street.

It was closing time and the front door was lucked but employees were still inside finishing up before they left for the night.

When the suspect could not get in, police say he pulled out a gun and shot out the front door of the business and then ran away without going into the store.

Lieutenant Jeff Childs with the Junction City Police Department says a car pulled into the parking lot at the time of the incident, possibly scaring the gunman off.

One of the employees was struck by shards of glass when the front door was shattered. They were taken to the hospital to be treated for minor lacerations, Childs said.

The Junction City Police Department’s K-9 Unit and investigators responded to the scene to help search for the armed suspect.

An arrest has not yet been made.

According to police reports, the incident is being investigated as an Aggravated Battery, Aggravated Attempted Robbery, Criminal Damage to Property and Unlawful Discharge of a Weapon.

Childs says because the suspect was so covered up, employees could not provide a detailed description.
