Topeka police were called just before 9 p.m. Sunday to the 1500 block of S.E. 22nd on a report of a pedestrian struck by a vehicle.
The pedestrian has been identified as Robin Nicholson, 52, of Topeka. Nicholson died after she was taken to a Topeka hospital.
Witnesses say she was trying to catch a stray dog when she was hit by an SUV.
A witness reported the vehicle was a white, boxy SUV driven by a black male wearing glasses. They say the vehicle sped off westbound on S.E. 22nd St. after it hit Nicholson.
A reconstruction team with the Topeka Police Department was on scene around 9:30 p.m. Detectives, the Shawnee County District Attorney's Office and members from the Crime Scene Investigation Unit are also on scene investigating.
