TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) - A standoff of several hours at a southeast Topeka apartment home has ended with the woman involved being taken from the scene in an ambulance.
Topeka Police were called around 2:20 Monday afternoon to the 1900 block of SE Pennsylvania. Police say a woman barricaded herself inside her apartment. They say she was throwing items outside and threatening her neighbors and police officers.
A little after 5 p.m., police say people were evacuated from surrounding apartment units, five children among them. By 6 p.m., witnesses say they could hear police communicating with the woman over a loudspeaker, asking her to "put down the machete."
Topeka Police entered the home shortly after 6:30 p.m., using keys brought in by the apartment manager. Topeka Police say the response team took Amber Schroeder, 22, into custody. She will be booked on aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer and on a neighbor. Schroeder was taken from the scene in an ambulance. Further information on her condition was not available.
Police say Schroeder was threatening her unborn child, but no one else was in the apartment with her.
Streets around the area were blocked while the incident unfolded.
