TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) - Recent copper thefts have Westar Energy asking customers to watch for suspicious behavior around their neighborhoods.
A theft at the Westar substation at 12th and Clay two weeks ago caused $300,000 damage and left 3200 customers in the dark.
A change to Kansas law now states that some metal thefts may be considered felonies instead of misdemeanors.
Anyone who sees anything suspicious should contact local law enforcement.
