TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) - Two Topekans earned honors for their efforts to help neighborhoods take a stand against crime.
Jeff Imparato and Judy Wilson received the Champion of Character Award during Wednesday's Safe Streets meeting. The pair was recognized for their work organizing the Shawnee County National Night Out against Crime events. They also accepted the 2012 National Night Out Award for Topeka and Shawnee County. It's the seventh year the area has gained national recognition for its efforts.
The 2013 events are coming up Saturday night, Aug. 10. The pair say it's a great way to get to know those who live around you.
"We are stressing this importance of neighbors being neighbors, neighbors going out and watching after each other and they'll know who belongs in the neighborhood," Imparato said. "It's just amazing how safe you can be if you know your neighbors are watching."
