TOPEKA -- Scores of volunteers for the Topeka Police Department will be honored at the annual volunteer appreciation event on Wednesday, June 15th at 6:00 pm at Coyote Canyon on Wanamaker.

Volunteers in Police Service or VIPS at the Topeka Police Department are an integral part of the organization and have proven to be a valuable asset to the Department’s many units. Under the general title of VIPS are specific and specialized citizen involvement opportunities, including a highly trained and uniformed patrol unit, administrative support volunteers, the Explorers Post 721 (Cadets), Chaplains, college and university students completing required educational internships, and the Ambassadors, a non-profit corporation composed of alumni of the Citizens Police Academies.

In 2010, the VIPS contributed 21,049 volunteer hours, which translates to a dollar value of $437,819.20 (using the Points of Light Foundation formula). This year the Lifetime Achievement Award will be presented to Shirley Swartz, who has volunteered at the Topeka Police Department since 1996. There will be three recipients of Presidential Gold Pins: Stephen Imming for most volunteer hours (1375) and Mimi Leonard and Eldon Eisenhour for exemplary service and leadership. Forty-one volunteers will receive Silver Service Pins; forty volunteers will be awarded Bronze Appreciation Pins.

Volunteers are recruited on a continuous basis. They come to the law enforcement arena with different agendas and various backgrounds. What they all have in common is a high regard for law enforcement and community involvement. With thorough and on-going training, a friendly and productive work environment and a strong sense of belonging, the VIPS at the Topeka Police Department are extremely loyal and provide immeasurable help and support toward achieving the Department’s goals and objectives.

Topekans who would like to be a part of the Volunteers in Police Service should call Ben Clay at 368-9237. Thank you!
