Topeka Man Arrested In Connection With Thursday Night Shooting

TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) - Police have arrested one person in connection with the Thursday night shooting at 1812 SE Pennsylvania.

26 year old Jajuan Marquis Welch, of 2045 SW MacVicar, was arrested Friday and booked into the Shawnee County Department of Corrections. He is charged with aggravated battery, aggravated burglary and aggravated assault.

Police continue to investigate the incident that occurred shortly after 9:00 p.m. Most of the Detective Bureau and many other resources at the TPD have been working on this case to uncover the event leading up to the death of one of the intruders.

More than one male entered the occupied home on SE Pennsylvania. Gun shots were fired inside the residence which led to the death of Cyril K. Smith, 31 years old. Several residents were home at the time and their names are withheld at this point in time. The motive for the intrusion is still being determined, however, there is no indication that this was a random act or that the public is in any danger.

The crime scene on Pennsylvania has been released to the residents. A search warrant was executed at 2045 SW Mac Vicar in relation to this case. Several witnesses, persons of interest and suspects have and continue to be interviewed.

The TPD will issue more information as investigative developments allow.
