TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) - A closed elementary school now has a new use.
Topeka Public Schools Campus Police and Safety held an open house Monday to show off their new office in the former Avondale East Elementary School. District officials say the move not only gives the agency needed space and gives new purpose to the building, it also gives officers a chance to be part of the neighborhood and add to its safety and security.
"We look forward to working with the community here," said Ron Brown, director of school safety for USD 501. "We plan to be here for the long haul and we hope that we can continue to partner with the Hi-Crest community and create good programs here at Avondale East."
The new office has space to accomodate the agency's operations. It also gives them room for training programs, such as the "sim-untions" shooting range guests at the open house could experience.
The school closed last year as part of budget cuts. USD 501 officials hope to bring even more programs into the school, such as Parents as Teachers.
