Thieves Taking Grease, Not Money, from Restaurants

SACRAMENTO, Cal. (FOX40/CNN)- Iron Steaks owner Bill Taylor says he has been robbed not once, but twice – and not of his money.

“I got my grease stolen,” Taylor told FOX40 Monday.

Law enforcement doesn’t normally handle cases like this, which is why Assemblymember Chris Holden, D-Pasadena, is hoping to change that.

A new proposed bill could provide tools for law enforcement to work on cases like Taylor’s.

The cooking grease at Iron Steaks is stored behind the building, unlocked inside a large green tub. For years, Taylor would have to pay to have it removed. That is, until about 10 years ago, when companies started converting grease into biodiesel.

And then, it became profitable.

“I get checks for several hundred dollars from companies who now pay me for it, so if they steal my grease it’s like robbing me,” Taylor said.

Taylor told FOX40 the thieves were seen on his surveillance tapes.

“They pull up, take it out with a hose, and drive off,” he said.

Hopefully the surveillance footage will help investigators find the thieves.
