TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) - Topeka's Sardou Bridge could be closed longer than expected, thanks to thieves.
City officials say, over the weekend, vandals removed parts of the steel expansion joint system from the west abutment that were made exclusively for the bridge. The pieces are 21 inches long and 7 inches square.
The contractor is checking with the supply company to determine how long it will take to reproduce the necessary parts.
The bridge work began and January and was to be completed by the end of this week. It's not known how long the theft will delay completion of the work.
Anyone with information on the thefts should contact Topeka Crime Stoppers at 785-234-0007.
