Dexter, Kan. -- A man is dead following an officer-involved shooting near Dexter in Cowley County.

Sheriff Don Read told KAKE News at the scene that it happened just after 7 p.m. Saturday near US Highway 166 and K-15. The Sheriff says a deputy was injured and a driver critically injured in a shooting.

The deputy was transported to the hospital, but is expected to recover. The driver has been pronounced dead.

Acquaintances of the driver say his name was Taylor Rock. It is not known what lead to the deputy being forced to fire his gun at the driver.

Residents near the crime scene were shocked to hear of the shooting. Diane Massey's house was located just a few miles from incident. "It was very disorienting, things like that don't happen around here," she said.

Sheriff Read said the case has been turned over to the KBI and the Kansas Highway Patrol and he could not provide any further details. A media briefing is scheduled at 1:30 p.m. on Monday.
