Shawnee Co. Commissioners To Consider Settlement In Jail Death

TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) - Shawnee County commissioners will consider Monday whether to settle a lawsuit over a death at the Shawnee County jail.

Two civil suits were filed by the family of John Bradley Rippee. Rippee died in the Shawnee County jail in November 2009. The 34-year old died in his cell after being arrested on a stalking charge in violation of a protective order.

Initial reports cited natural causes.

One of the civil suits filed last November was for medical malpractice. The other was filed in April, seeking monetary damages.

Shawnee County Counselor Rich Eckert is recommending a settlement for $150,000.
