TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) - A search for two runaways landed a wanted fugitive behind bars.
Topeka Police say detectives went to a home at 534 SE Golden looking for a pair of runaways and instead saw 36-year-old Richard Ippolito run out the back door. Police say the detectives knew Ippolito had a felony warrant for violating parole on convictions of theft, drug possession and aiding and abetting burglary.
Police say Ippolito ran into a nearby tree line and went several blocks to the 500 block of SE Woodland. Officers caught up with him after a citizen reported seeing him run into an empty home at 521 SE Woodland.
The home's tenants were contacted by phone and verified no one should be inside the residence. They brought officers the keys to go inside, where canines and officers found Ippolito hiding behind a washing machine.
Ippolito was checked for heat exhaustion, then booked into jail for the warrant and additional charges of felony obstruction, burglary and two counts of contributing to a childs misconduct for harboring runaways.
