MCLOUTH, Kan. (WIBW) -- The eleven remaining McLouth High School students, and two district sponsors, are on their way back home from their nightmare trip to Costa Rica.
Their trip was cut short when fellow student, Justin Johnston, 16, was shot and killed there Thursday morning.
The Johnston family is now heading to Costa Rica, to identify their son and bring him home.
Officials say it happened in the middle of the night Wednesday. Two students were out of their hotel rooms when a hotel security guard mistook Justin for an intruder, and shot him.
A spokesman for the US State Department told 13 News the US does not have authority to conduct an investigation, but US Embassy officials in San Jose are meeting with local officials and monitoring the situation closely.
Justin had just finished his sophomore year, when his life was cut short.
Four other students from Kansas have died in Costa Rica in the last ten years.
