TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) - A man has died after a shooting in southeast Topeka. Police continue to investigate the early Thursday morning shooting that killed him.
Topeka police officers used canines and canvassed the area for clues. Authorities got the call at 3:50 a.m. that a shooting victim was in the 2800 block of SE Highland Court.
Authorities arrived to find a 29-year-old Brian Andrews with a gunshot wound to the abdomen.
A short distance from him, there was a car stopped against the front of 2854 SE Highland Ct., a duplex in the Pine Ridge housing. 13 News spoke with the man who lives there. He said knew Andrews personally and believes Andrews was looking for a safe place to hide before he was shot.
Andrews was taken to the hospital where police say he was pronounced dead.
Authorities blocked off Highland Court to the intersection of SE Gilmore and forced residents to stay inside for much of the day.
Police are awaiting autopsy results before releasing any further information. They're asking anyone with information to call Crimestoppers at 234-0007.
