Updated: January 5, 2011 Topeka police have concluded their investigation into a stabbing early Tuesday morning that left one man dead. It is now in the hands of the district attorneys office.
The Topeka Police Department has wrapped up their investigation into the stabbing death of 57 year old Dennis Emery but no charges have been filed.
All statements and documents regarding the stabbing at St. Gregory's Suites on SW Harrison have been handed over to the Shawnee County district attorneys office for review.
Police investigating the case identified 32 year old Rebecca Petitt of Topeka, as a "person of interest" in the case, hours after Dennis Emery was found stabbed to death.
Petitt was located Tuesday afternoon and taken into custody, where she was questioned and released.
Topeka Police Chief Ron Miller says facts gathered both from the incident and about the histories of those involved lead them to believe it was domestic violence related.
No arrests have been made or are anticipated.
Miller says while this may be the first homicide of the year -- it may not be the city's first murder in 2011.
While the Topeka police department is not recommending charges Shawnee county district attorney Chad Taylor has the final say.
TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) - A Topeka apartment complex turned into a crime scene early Tuesday morning.
Police say they were called to St. Gregory Apartments, 635 SW Harrison, just before 5 a.m. in reference to a stabbing.
When they arrived, police say they found Dennis Emery, age 57 of Topeka lying on the floor of a hallway on the fourth floor. Emery was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police are looking for a person of interest in this case, identified as Rebecca Petitt, age 32 of Topeka. If anyone has any information about this incident, or knows the whereabouts of Petitt, they are strongly encouraged to contact detectives at 368-9400, or Crime Stoppers at 234-0007.
