TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) - A Topeka man declared insane after he beat an elderly woman to death, will undergo another psych exam.
The state requested the evaluation for Hal Bates, stating concerns have arisen regarding his condition.
Bates will be transferred to Larned State Hospital for treatment.
He was recently released to a Topeka nursing facility for mental health, but Shawnee County prosecutors want him transferred back to Pawnee County.
Bates was found not guilty by reason of insanity in the March 2001 beating death of 85-year-old Elizabeth Cowpertherwaite.
