TOPEKA, Kan (WIBW) Shawnee County Officials are warning the public to be on continued alert protecting your mail from thieves.

The Shawnee County Sheriff's Office says that mail thieves are alerted to your mailbox when the rred flag is up and are targeting bills, checks or other documents in order to get personal information such as social security numbers andcredit card info.

Tips to keep your mail safe include using the letter slots at your post office, drop off letters or bills at a drop box that's picked up frequently or giving your mail directly to a letter carrier.

Officials say to pick up your mail right after delivery, and never leave mail in the mailbox overnight.

Don’t send cash and be cautious of checks in the mail.

Tell your post office when you’ll be out of town. They can hold your mail until you return.

Consider starting a neighborhood watch program. By exchanging work and vacation schedules with trusted friends and neighbors, you can watch each other's mailboxes and homes.

Report any suspicious activity to the Shawnee County Sheriff’s Office at 251-2200.
