TOPEKA -- A new sheriff for Shawnee County will be selected Thursday.
That person will fill the remaining term of Sheriff Dick Barta, who retired last week, leaving the position vacant.
Now, it's the job of the Shawnee County Republican Party to vote and fill the sheriff's job during its public meeting. That session is set for 7:00pm Thursday evening in the Gym of Highland Park High School.
Undersheriff Herman Jones is overseeing the position as the changes are happening. Sheriff Barta had originally announced he would not see re-election this fall, then said under the Federal Hatch Act, he could not serve while a candidate was running for the position.
Undersheriff Jones says he fully intends to run for the post in the primary and general election, and is expected to be appointed to the post at this week's Highland Park meeting.
