KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) A Kansas City police officer has pleaded guilty to assault for hitting a suspect several times during an arrest.
Carl Counti pleaded guilty Friday to third-degree assault and was sentenced to two years' probation and 30 days in jail. Counti resigned from the department Thursday.
The 21-year-old suspect was taken into custody Oct. 5 after he jumped out of a car and ran from police. Officers caught him a short while later and handcuffed him when he continued to resist. Court records said Counti struck the suspect in the head and face at least six times.
A photo taken of the suspect after the arrest shows his right eye blackened and swollen shut.
The incident was discovered by a police supervisor who reviewed dashboard videotape of the arrest.
