TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) - Kansas Bureau of Investigation agents executed a search warrant to exhume the bodies of two Kansas murderers Tuesday.
The bodies were exhumed so Florida detectives can try to link Perry Smith and Richard Hickok to the 1959 murders of a family of four in a rural Florida community.
Smith and Hickock were convicted of murdering Herb and Bonnie Clutter, and their son and daughter, Kenyon and Nancy in Holcomb back in 1959.
The story was immortalized in Truman Capote's novel "In Cold Blood".
Detectives say the Florida killer left behind DNA on a preserved piece of clothing.
Smith and Hickok fled to Florida after the Kansas killings.
