TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) - Shawnee County officially has its new sheriff.
Herman Jones took his oath of office Thursday in a ceremony at the Law Enforcement Center.
The former undersheriff was chosen for the top job last week by Republican Party committee members last Thursday, garnering 160 of the 211 eligible votes. He replaces Richard Barta, who took part in this Thursday's event.
Jones says he's ready to get to work for the citizens. He says one area of communication he feels could be better utilized is social media, not only to publicize events, but also to spread crime prevention and awareness information.
Barta retired before his term was up, citing a federal law called the "Hatch Act" could have forced Herman Jones to leave his job in order to campaign for the higher office in the November election.
