(WIBW) - The Highland Community College women's basketball coach has been indicted in a multi-state car theft ring.
William "B.J." Smith of Highland is one of 21 people facing federal charges in what is thought to be a $2.5 million ring.
An 84-count indictment filed in the Eastern District of Missouri accuses the defendants of bank fraud, interstate transportation of stolen vehicles, vehicle title fraud and insurance fraud. Smith alone faces 16 counts in the alleged thefts of luxury vehicles, SUVs and pickups from Missouri, Iowa, Illinois and Indiana.
Smith has been women's coach at Highland Community College for two years. His teams have a 58-10 record during his tenure.
