TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) - A report of shots fired at an apartment building put Topeka's Highland Park High School on lockdown for a short time Monday afternoon.
Topeka Police say they received a report around 1:40 pm that multiple shots were fired in the 2200 block of SE 23rd. More shots were reported a short time later in the 2200 block of SE Adams.
Since the initial report was just blocks from the school, school district officials say a lockdown was initiated as a precaution. It was lifted about ten minutes later and students dismissed from school as usual.
Principal Beryl New says the school practices what to do in the event of an emergency and the procedure went smoothly.
So far, police have no reports anyone was injured by the gunshots.
Anyone with information should contact Topeka Crime Stoppers at 785-234-0007.
