TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) - The woman who led an organization aimed at empowering all Topeka neighborhoods will now focus her efforts on one.
Former Safe Streets Director Sally Zellers was introduced Wednesday as head of the new NET Reach effort in Topeka's Hi-Crest area.
NET stands for Neighborhood Empowerment and Transformation. It's a new social service ministry of the Topeka Rescue Mission designed to target poverty, homelessness and other issues in specific areas.
Zellers will lead the NET Reach initiative in the Hi-Crest West Neighborhood. She says the area has a lot of challenges, but residents are excited to roll up their sleeves and bring about change. She says meetings with residents began several months ago.
The Hi-Crest neighborhood has been diagnosed as "intensive care" in the city's Neighborhood Health Map. Zellers says the goal it upgrade that.
NET Reach plans to utilize the former Avondale East School building as a community hub to connect with social services and provide activities.
